Session 2: Photoshop collage

Today in Media Design the lecturer gave an introduction on the first assignment brief, and I learned some theory about the importance of semiotics and visual imagery. He informed me that minimal symbolism can work to create a significant design as less is more.

The task I was given was to make a web-ready abstract minimal poster for a movie that I have never seen before by reading about the film to get ideas on the theme. The movie I had chosen was Ex Machina.
Some tools I used today was 'Polygonal Lasso Tool', and the 'Magnetic Lasso Tool' to trace around the edges and selected parts of the layer to either delete or cut the image which I thought was very interesting. I also learned how to change the font to make it more appealing.

For Media Design and Event Management I was introduced to the assignment where I had to choose two possible movies or books that is going to adapted into a stage show. My task is to promote this stage show through various marketing materials. I must design a logo, develop sketches, an animated GIF Poster promoting the stage show and 2 alternate versions of ticket designs. The movie I considered were The greatest showman and Twilight.

The greatest showman is a musical with showstopping performances that is a great entertainment for all ages. It portrays a character who rose to fame from nothing to creating an outstanding performance at the circus.
I had also considered Twilight which is a romantic fantasy film. This film focuses on the development on the relationship between a teenage girl and a vampire. The aim of the movie is for the vampire and his family to protect the teenage girl from evil vampires.

I am still not confident with Photoshop as I have not used it before and this is my second session working on Photoshop therefore there is still a lot to learn but I will continuously develop my knowledge on Photoshop by practicing throughout the module and making use of the lectures by asking for help from my lecturer, these skills will make my assignment stronger and effective.

Assignment 1: Session 1: Photoshop First Activity

Photoshop has been widely used as an editing tool to enhance images to improve their appearance. It is a necessary skill for me to develop as it enables me to show my designing skills, in producing good visual communication and in using narrative media forms to present ideas and information.

For the first Media Design for Event management lecture, I was introduced to Photoshop by my lecturer. He went through the basics of Photoshop and helped me create an image using the various tools, attached above (where is my Mind?). From this, I learned how to use Photoshop, where I developed skills to support me with the assignment as I have an understanding of the software. Some of the tools I used where Rasterize layer which turns the image into a standard layer and free transform tool which helped me to resize the robot and move it to a suitable place.

I enjoyed working with Photoshop and became aware of what I did well and what could have gone better as this was something I have never done before. I will be using Blogger as a way to display my Photoshop work and the different skills I came across in the Media design lectures. This will be one method of analyzing the progress I have made throughout the module.
